Francine Prose, Reading Like a Writer

Francine Prose has been around the literary scene for some time now. Always hovering. But it is now that she has come of age and made a significant impact with her new book.

Of all the books about literature Reading Like a Writer leaves other books of similar nature behind─at the starting line. This is a super stellar performer! But instead of just singing praise--unlike Augustine who only sang praises to the Lord but never gave reasons--let me tell you why I love the book.

Ovid guided Dante through Inferno and Purgatory, but was not allowed into Paradise. Beatrice led Dante into Paradise.

Well, Francine Prose is our Beatrice because she transports us to a reading paradise from which we don’t want to leave. There we meet Flaubert, Kafka, Austen, Dickens, Woolf, Dostoyevsky, George Eliot, Joyce, and many other kindred spirits.

With a simple, humble, and clear prose, Ms. Prose handles the masters as they should be handled, with respectful distance--and love.

Not only did I learn from this book about “reading” better, but also about “writing” better.

Anyone who wants to write a short story or a novel will benefit from this compendium of human insight and technique. I wish I had written this book!
